Problem:
Most two-story homes have an 8-12 degree difference in temperature between upstairs and downstairs. Most ranch-style homes have an 8-12 degree difference in temperature between one end of the home and the other. A home with this problem is NOT a comfortable place to live.

Solution:
Zone control! Zoning is a relatively easy way to improve overall space comfort and lower operating costs. With zoning – a single heating and cooling system can be enhanced to provide more precise comfort control throughout an entire home.

Zone control components:

  • Zone Panel – the brains of the system, the zone panel connects directly to the heating/cooling equipment and interprets commands from the thermostats in the different zones of the home. The zone panel calls for heating or cooling and controls the opening and closing of zone dampers.
  • Thermostats – these controls reside in the different zones of the home and send commands to the zone panel to call for heating or cooling when there is a change in zone temperature. Most modern zone control systems are able to incorporate standard, non-proprietary thermostats.
  • Dampers – dampers are installed inline within a homes ductwork. The dampers in a zoned system open and close to allow more or less heated or cooled into their zones. Dampers are typically configured as normally open – powered closed, but can also be set up to open when powered. Most dampers require 24VAC from the zone panel to close or open.
