Works well for a room that had little access to wire the thermostat. Had to reset the the temperature gauge (it was showing about 4 degrees cooler then actual) but that was easy to do. Setting the weekly program is not very intuative but once set, you are done. Otherwise, I am very pleased. This room was always too hot or too cold in the past and now my son can sleep here.
This is a great alternative to moving a poorly placed hard-wired thermostat. The receiver mounts in place of your existing thermostat, and the sender can be placed wherever you want it.
The device itself works very well, but the instruction manual is very poorly written.
Had a continuing issue with a thermostat that was mounted on an internal attic wall. The device always read hotter due to the temperature inside the attic. The VENSTAR unit with the wireless remote solved the issue and now we have a reliable gauge of the actual temperature. The system was easy to install and took only about 20 minutes to be up and running. Highly recommend.
This is one of the most useful technological devices I have ever owned. When we purchased our home the upstairs thermostat was halfway down the hallway which seems logical until you factor in the open architecture of the front hall and stairs which fooled the thermostat into thinking the temperature was the same in all four bedrooms. So our system ran much more than was required simply to try to even out the temperature. Now I can just lie in bed and adjust the temperature to suit our comfort needs. It is so nice to be able to do that without ever getting out of bed even if we wake up in the middle of the night feeling either too warm or cold. In addition my wife can take the wireless thermostat down the hall to the other end of the house where she has her office during the day so she can be comfortable.
Compared to my other 7-day programmable thermostats, this one was easiest to program. This is mainly because it allows the 4 settings for each day to be copied forward, rather than re-entered for each day. The directions were clear and installation took 10 minutes. Performance wise, it delivers everything as advertised. Highly recommended for open houses where the original thermostat is poorly located. I am sleeping in comfort now.
I needed this product because our former thermostat was located in a hallway and it was being influenced by the heat rising from the lower floor. This generally caused the hallway to be warm and the rooms to be cool. The Venstar gives me more flexibility than I would have gotten if I simply had the old thermostat installed physically into one of the rooms. The portability of the Venstar is key and it's wonderful. The Venstar has solved my heating problem.
The Venstar Receiver was truly easy to install. Programming the Venstar thermostat however was much too complicated. The instructions assume you having a keen understanding of heating and cooling jargon and technology. There is little that is user friendly about programming this thermostat. Once I was finally able to get the basics into the thermostat, it is very easy and convenient to make minor adjustments to the temperature. I also bought the electric module as a backup for the batteries in the Venstar. When I first programmed the thermostat, it was connected to this module. When I then disconnected the module from the thermostat (so the thermostat was again powered by the batteries), all the info I had just entered during the programming exercise had been lost. One other issue--the Venstar has a feature which allows a switch to/from heating/cooling automatically. I can't use this, but I couldn't figure out how to override this function. Since it's heating season now, I simply switched off the breakers for the air conditioning.
Bottom line--I would recommend this to a friend, however with reservations.
I had my old 2 wire connection go on the fritz between my T-Stat and boiler. The mess of replacing the wire from the boiler to the T-Stat was going to be a big problem. This solved my problem very well. When I build my next house I'll go wireless. I was able to program it after reading the instructions a few times, so that would be my only complaint, a very minor deal.
This thermostat was installed to regulate the temperature in our bedroom. It works as advertised, no problems. Programming is a bit of a chore, don't lose the manual, but overall a good product for the price.
The directions from Venstar are very basic. You'll have to go online to see comparisons with thermostat you are replacing. "Just Answers" website was very helpful for a small fee.
Somewhere in the web write up it should mention that this unit can only be installed on an old 2 wire thermostat with a special kit. The kit is available and easy to install, but no where is it mentioned.
