Suncourt VS100 Variable Speed Fan Controller - Solid State AC Motor Speed Fan Control. It is designed for mounting in a 2" X 4" electrical wall box. It operates from 115 VAC, 50/60 Hz and has a maximum rating of 2.5 Amps @ 25°C. It provides infinitely variable speed motor control for Shaded Pole, Permanent Split Capacitor and Universal (AC/DC) motors. The variable speed motor control contains an on/off line switch, a high gain RFI noise suppression filter, a minimum speed trimpot and a flame retardant ABS enclosure. I purchased this speed controller to run a radon fan that is mounted just outside. The fan actually created too much manifold vacuume so I purchased the speed controller to bring it back into specs which it easily does. As expected the fan give off a humming noise at less than full speed but I can live with that. Would I buy another one for a similar application? yes.

The 4" fan is incredibly powerful and does a great job of removing the hot air out of a computer closet. The variable speed control works well. My only complaint; it makes a worse electrical humming noise as you turn the speed down, worse than the fan noise itself.
As far as the noise, the only thing left to do is to remote the fan further away and have it run at full tilt. I'm sure this fan would be quite enough for most uses, my criteria is that of a recording studio. I think these are great and want to install then all around the house;-)
