The thermostat will operate using 24V AC or two AA batteries. When the two AA batteries are installed the thermostat will continue to run if the 24V AC fails.

This unit was a perfect replacement for my manual Rheem thermostat. After reviewing the details online, this one had the best features and allows adjustments that others may not have. I particularly needed the setting of temperature differential. The default is 1 degree, which kept my unit running nearly constantly. My setting is now 2.5. The ability to copy one day's settings to others helped also! Simply read the instructions CAREFULLY, and all will work wonderfully.

Installation is straightforward, with a separate base containing the terminals that mates with a front panel with the display and control buttons. Pulling the front panel from the back takes some care before it's mounted.
It works well with my two stage furnace and allows me to set the first-second stage differential.
The display is highly visible and easy to understand.
Setpoint controls are exposed at all times. Over-riding the setpoint for 3 hours (the default) is simple - just change the setting. However, it you want a hold/override time longer than three hours you must flip up the secondary cover to punch a button.
Programming is straightforward but you can only go forward in any given day - if you make a mistake in time/temp you can't correct it w/o re-starting the day's programming. Programming for single days can be copied to one or more other days - very nice feature if you setup all weekdays the same.
This unit has the advantage of running off furnace 24 V with battery backup - it does not draw on the batteries unless the 24 V fails (does not appear to use rechargeable batteries).

Easy to follow directions. I nstalled it myself in about an hour...would have been quicker but I'm a slow reader. Works great. House stays comfortable and my heat pump is not constantly runing anymore.

I have a dual fuel system and an upstairs and downstairs unit, so I needed two heatpump thermostats. As I was pricing them out, I was pleasantly surprised to find this one available with the features it had. I ordered the first one and installed it and ordered a second one the same week after trying it out. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone with a heatpump.

Very pleased with thermostat for running an electric heater and a heat pump for heat and cool. The primary reason for buying Robert Shaw was differential temp adjust to prevent my heating system from turning on and off all the time, something that the other manufacturers don't seem to have much of. I was actually concerned that this thermostat would be a pain to program, but it is very straightforward with good instructions. The ease of use was an added bonus, my wife walked right up to it and figured it out without reading the instructions. I did have some difficulty with the installation primarily because the original thermostat was wired in a ,"creative", fashion rather than, "by the book". Commonality in terminal convention between thermostat mfgrs and heating system mfgrs would eliminate alot of wasteful creativity in wiring, but this is obviously an industry problem and does not reflect on Prothermostats or Robert Shaw.
