Comments about Broan-Nutone Broan QTRE080R Easy-Retrofit UltraSilent Fan:
The greatest advantage to this product is that it doesn't require attic access, making it perfect for retrofit in a downstairs bathroom. Installation was relatively easy, though there were a few hitches.
Using the cardboard template (as shown in the video) didn't work well, I ended up with a cutout larger than the frame required and had to patch it. Fortunately the larger grille covers it up so that no one sees.
My home was built back in the 1960s, so I had a 3" rigid duct that could not be replaced without tearing into the ceiling. The biggest problems I encountered were with that duct. I had to cut it back to provide room for the 4" to 3" adaptor, and to allow room for a flex connection, since the duct port on the old fan came in on the opposite side. Since I didn't want to open up the ceiling, I had to find a way to cut back the rigid ducting within a limited space. Fortunately, I was able to pull it far enough forward to cut with a hacksaw (next time I'll use a Dremel tool with a cutting blade). Even so, the flex connection does a complete 360-degree turn so as to line up with the port on the fan--I'm sure it would be both quieter and more efficient if it were a straight connection.
Bottom line: it is much easier than it might have been to install this new fan, and it was great that I could do this on the first floor of my 2-storey house. This fan is certainly quieter than the ancient contractor-grade fan it replaced, and it works better as well. But if you have an older home it's not quite the piece of cake that the video would lead you to believe.

Comments about Broan-Nutone Broan QTRE080R Easy-Retrofit UltraSilent Fan:
We replaced a noisy contractor grade fan in our 5' x 8' bathroom. The installation was really easy compared to a replacement fan we did in another bathroom a year or so ago. The design makes replacement very easy when you don't have access from above. The fan moves quite a bit of air and is very quiet.

Comments about Broan-Nutone Broan QTRE080R Easy-Retrofit UltraSilent Fan:
Glad to find a retrofit fan- we can't access the attic, and didn't want to tear up the ceiling. Original fan installation had rigid ductwork - had to replace a section with flex duct to connect with the duct connector bracket (see page 4 of instructions). The bracket still bent a bit, causing a gap between it and the housing after the housing was pushed up into the ceiling opening. Remedied that by removing the blower assembly (page 6), and taping the gap airtight with metal duct tape. This solution could remedy other reviewer's comments on this topic.

I have been looking for a product like this for years! The sliding bracket made installation a breeze! My only con, if you can call it that is the fan is a bit noisier than I thought it would be, but it is still better that the $5 builder's POC fan that I replaced! Easily a 5 star item!

Installation in old house

Comments about Broan-Nutone Broan QTRE080R Easy-Retrofit UltraSilent Fan:
In my old house there turned out to be too little depth in the hole left when I took out the old fan, because the existing ceiling was dropped below the original lath. I had to adapt nearly every aspect of the installation, which took a great deal of time and fiddling. I do feel, however, that it went better than it would have with a fan not designed for retrofitting. Also, the draft stopper butterfly seemed flimsy and did not reliably close until I taped a coin to the bottom part of it to provide more weight. Even then it did not seal very well. The same is true for the joints between the fan body and the separate neck that holds the draft stopper. That area should be manufactured with a brush seal or a rubber seal, as the metal-to-metal seal is not very tight when the fan body is slid up into place.

Comments about Broan-Nutone Broan QTRE080R Easy-Retrofit UltraSilent Fan:
Although the project was very difficult due to a very odd bathroom overhead configuration (I had to return my original fan choice since it required access from above), the ventilation fan was easy to hook up & install. It's nice and quiet, just what I was hoping for.
