Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

I've never installed a thermostat on a heat pump system, but replacement of an old 20 year old mercury thermostat was fairly straight forward. I labeled the wires, took off the old thermostat, attached the mounting plate, attached the wires, and then snapped in the thermostat. Switching the setup menu 170 to 7 was all that was needed to activate the thermostat for the 2 stage heat 1 stage cool system.
Programming the thermostat was simple enough that my wife who's not a geek could easily do with the directions from the user manual.
Only con is that it is programmable and you have to read the manual to understand all the programming features.
It works much better that the old thermostat.

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

I used this to replace an old Honeywell unit that finally died on me. (Honeywell itself was no help in diagnosing that problem!) I have a two-zone system with heat and cool on each. 24 VAC power is supplied by the furnace. This unit worked right out of the box and was very easy to program and set. Installation was straight-forward. I have some single-zone thermostats to replace and may well go with the single-zone version of this one.

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

We have a 2-stage furnace and no A/C. The circulate mode (runs fan for about 35% of the time even when furnace is off) is great for keeping the temperature even in the house. The programming is simple and very logical. Great features, and we're very happy with it. Only "con" so far is the short backlight time (only stays on for a few seconds when screen is touched). That may be settable in the programming---but I haven't looked for that yet.

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

In 1989 I installed a Water Furnace geo-thermal heat pump in my home. At that time programable thermostats were not available for heat pumps. Over the years the original thermostat has progressivly gotten worse about holding the set temp. It recently advanced to a 4 deg range, so I decided to replace it. Ater considerable research, I decided on the Honeywell VisionPro 8000. I am a professional and had no problems with installation or setup. It took about 20 minutes for removal of the old thermostat and installation of the new unit. About 10 minutes for programming. If your original thermostat has the proper wire labels stamped in the backing plate, the average DIYer should not have any problems with installation or setup. Please besure you read the entire manual before starting installation. Pay particular attention to the setup section under code 0170 for everyone and code 0190 if you have a heat pump. If you do not set these codes properly the thermostat will not work for your unit. I bought the opitional $12 dollar back plate and did not need to use it. The thermostat covers an area 5 1/2" wide by 4" tall. You only need the optional back plate if you need to cover a larger area. I am very pleased with the operation of the VisionPro 8000. The programming schedule was easy to setup and it maintains my homes tempurature to the exact setting.

Obvious Configuration Flaw
By Mike the Furnace GuyVerified Reviewer from NE Ohio on 1/2/2009
Pros:
Intuitive Controls
Cons:
Limited Configuration Opt
Best Uses:
Homes, Large Rooms, Small Rooms
Describe Yourself:
Handyman, Homeowner, Professional

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

Good thermostat IF your system conforms to limited configuration choices.
3heat + 2cool capability implies that a single stage heatpump with a 2 stage high efficiency furnace (3 heat + 1 cool) is within its scope. Unfortunately this is not the case. (Dumb)
Only way to achieve 3 stages of heat is with 2 stage heatpump + single stage furnace. It will handle a 2 stage high efficiency furnace, but not if combined with a heat pump!! (Dumb^2)
No way to know this from the documentation either... You only find out after you have the unit in hand that certain configuration choices nullify access to others.
Really disappointing since all the building blocks are there, you just can't combine them for this obvious system combination. (Dumb^3)
And those clackety clack relays every time the unit changes state......
What gives, Honeywell? Are you guys really this dumb, or are you just trying to push me to a (much) more expensive thermostat?
How 'bout a modest effort to make your product more usable by allowing the available capabilities to be more flexible in their usage. This is not a bottom end thermostat, I expect a little more thought at this price point.
So, I have options:
1) Treat my new high efficiency, two stage furnace as a single stage unit, with heat pump. (2 heat + 1 cool) I can use the thermostat with outdoor sensor to lock out the heatpump below 35F.
2) Configure for two stage furnace with no heat pump and jury rig an outdoor temp switch to select between heatpump or primary heat based on outside temp.
3) Buy another (non-Honeywell) thermostat

Which one of these options looks good to you?

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

Before purchase, I studied the on-line installation manual and my existing system, so I was able to install the unit in a few minutes, despite the warning the only a qualified electrician should attempt the installation. Although it is among the more expensive units, the do it yourself installation provided a good value. My previous system, installed by a professional, cost more than $250 about 10 years ago. The new unit has been on line only a few days but seems to work well. I am looking forward to the summer when I can run it in intermittent fan mode, so that we can get air circulation on the second floor bedrooms. That should solve the problem of our higher nighttime temperatures in the upstairs part of the house in the summer.

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

4 years ago I created a dual fuel system at my home in New England a 15SEER heat pump to compliment my oil furnace. However, there were no controls to run them. I needed a system that at a certain temperature cut the compressor out and kicked in the oil furnace - and locked out the oil furnace above the set temp. Nothing under a $10k computer driven system existed to do that - until now. Where I used to operate the system manually, using the emergency heat hooked into the oil, and the heat pump on the 'On' side, now its all automatic. The heat pump is much less costly to operate than oil at $4 / gallon when all you need to do is remove the chill from the air on a cold fall or spring morning. Plus, on those Nov and Dec afternoons when temps are in the 40's and 50's the heat pump will come on, and at night with temps in the 20's we'll burn the more expensive and higher BTU #2 heating oil. That was the design back in 2003 and its finally how it works.

Service & Delivery comments:

Prompt shipping. Initial unit was defect. Honeywell was WORTHLESS in their service, claiming this is a contractor only unit and they refused to provide any information until I claimed to be a contractor. They then said it was defective and to return it. This company took my call and shipped a replacement unit within a day.

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

My previous thermostat was a Carrier Debonair 220 Commercial unit that worked very well but didn't allow me to choose anything other than using Auto Change Over mode. I wanted greater personal control than it allowed me. The new Honeywell unit controlled all of the same things as the Carrier unit but also allowed me to choose Heat, Cool, Off in addition to Auto Change Over.

VisionPro 8000 - Load Relays
By WillVerified Purchaser from East Greenville, PA on 4/16/2008

Cons:
Noise level of relays, Only one housing color
Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:
Homeowner
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Honeywell Honeywell VisionPro 8000 Programmable MultiStage Thermostat:

Great control for use with multiple backup heat systems (h/pump emergency and oil furnace, say); the use of the outdoor sensor allows for a cross-over temperature to be set so you can program the control when, what temperature, to switch between the backup heating sources, efectively eliminating the need for two controllers - it also enables the display of the outside temperature. It's a shame the relays in the control are so loud; the relays can be heard in an adjacent room! Click, click, click...
