Braeburn Model 5200 2 Heat/2 Cool Programmable Multistage Thermostat The digital programmable thermostat shall be a Braeburn®, model number 5200, 4.63" high x 5.00" wide x 1.25" deep, powered by 24 Volt AC with two "AA" Alkaline batteries (3.0 Volt DC) to retain clock settings and universal 7 or 5-2 day switch selectable programming. The thermostat shall be compatible with multi-stage heat pump systems with up to two stages of heating and two stages of cooling. The thermostat shall have a bright blue backlight display, front loading battery door, separate sub-base for trouble free installation and keypad lockout. Temperature control range shall be between 45° and 90° F (7° and 32° C), accuracy of +/- 1° F (+/- .5° C), humidity range between 5% and 95% relative humidity. The thermostat shall include non-volatile memory to retain user settings, filter check monitor, adaptive recovery mode (ARMT), separate heating and cooling set point program times and temperatures, programmable recirculating fan mode, residual cooling fan delay, auxiliary heat fossil fuel switch, multi-colored LED status indicators and compressor power outage protection. I wanted a programmable thermostat to replace my Braeburn 3200. The 5200 description stated that this was interchangeable with the base of the 3200. So, I was looking forward to a plug in change taking a minute or so - not the case!

The 5200 manual stated I needed to change the base and rewire.

There is a reset button on the printed circuit board at the back. I found that this could be pressed by the wires coming out from the wall and make the display go blank, when plugging the thermostat into the base. Being an engineer, it didn't take long to work that one out, but it was a shame the reset buton is where it is.

Fortunately I had already labeled each wire from a previous, but failed, install of another brand of thermostat (that didn't work with my system as its sales flyer had stated!). That made the re-wiring much easier.

Overall, not such a simple "plug and play" 3200 to 5200 swap as I'd hoped.


The 5200, once installed, was easy to program and set up. It has some nice features such as a keypad lock and override. It has worked fine so far and is saving me money by not heating/cooling when I'm out!

Not for the novice to install, but a nice thermostat!
