My application was a retrofit situation. I bought this unit to replace the original Broan 688J (50 CFM; 2 Sones; 3" Duct) that was undersized (& noisy) for a 7' x 10' bathroom. Installation definitely requires attic access given the upsizing of duct and the mounting option used (screwed directly to adjacent ceiling joist). The supplied hanger bars were not used. Strongly recommend to inspect the fan housing & duct connector prior to install to foil-tape-close all air-leak sources (unused holes & inadvertent openings). Not doing this will result in significant attic-air intrusion into the vented air space. The fan has been installed about 3 weeks as of this writing. The short-term opinion is one of satisfaction all around.

fan comes on and shuts off by it self put it on power and forget about it .last fan was left on alot.vent inside flap kept falling off when being installed.

I researched bathroom vent fans and decided on this model.I installed it myself and found it a simple installation.There was one small problem with the humidity sensing module.One week after installation it stopped functioning.Broan handled the support effeciantly and curtiously.This fan is quiet.Performs very well and is not obtrusive.
It has met all of my expectations.I am highly recommending this product.

I INSTALLED THIS PRODUCT IN MY BATHROOM. IT IS SO QUITE, I HAD TO GO INTO THE ACTIC TO MAKE SURE IT WAS WORKING. THE MINUTE IT DETACTS MOISTURE, IT BEGINS TO WORK. AFTER A SHOWER, THE MIRROR CLEARS UP IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. IT ALSO IS GREAT WHEN USED MANUALLY TO REMOVE BATHROOM ORDERS. I HAVE ONLY HAD IT FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS, SO I HAVEN'T FOUND ANYTHING NEGATIVE YET.

Installed the fans in two adjacent bathrooms. They are so quiet that I never know they are running until I check the "off" indicator light on the two-function control switch. After installation, we never need to worry about turning them on or off. I can rely on them to do their jobs and then turn off themselves. The moisture sensing technology is a must!

Not designed for retrofits. Great unit however. I will probably buy one for another bathroom. Humidity sensor works very well. Pretty quiet too. Pricey but highly recommended.

We recently installed a fan in each of two bedroom bathrooms. The plastic backdraft damper that is supplied to carry ducting to the roof broke on both fans before then ever got installed. It is made of cheap plastic pins with foam on edge on framework to soften noise. This damper does not stop cold air from coming in, its shape doesn't really cover the opening. We had to repair both dampers (we have the skills, most would not)and still keep them functional. The damper flap has two plastic pins that fit in two plastic u-shaped devices on the damper frame. These pins can break when trying to remove the flap from the frame. The entire damper should be sheetmetal, period. The wind causes it to bang back and forth. The fan is quiet, but it isn't always turned on.

I bought 2 of these fans, for both bathrooms. I cannot comment about the ease of installation, because I hired someone to do it. I love these fans. They come on automatically, are VERY quiet and just do the job of eliminating the moisture in the room.

This is truly the best bathroom fan. I would pay the extra cost again and again. It's worth it. Very powerful, yet can barely hear it. My bathroom was foggy like a sauna. Now their is no steamed up mirror or window. That is with the door and window closed.
The only downfall was installation. The brackets it came with were made for new construction. Not too much of a problem. Just cut the 90 degree tab on the the bracket and nail or screw it to the joist. Just remember to cut floor on next level from joist to joist, not "to size".
The humidity sensing is irreplaceable. You install it, set the sensitivity and timer and your good to go. No worry about who turns it on and off. I have mine set to "Min Sensitivity" and "60 minutes". It doesn't go off for outside humidity, and it goes on within a minute after shower is turned on. I have it set to stay on for 60 minutes after the humidity falls below "Min" level. Better safe than sorry when mold is a concern.
I would recommend this to everyone.

quiet fan, installs easily, ceiling mount only... Broan says they do not approve a vertical( wall mount ) installation.. too bad they don't make a wall mount version of this fan. User adjustable humidity sensitivity works well, mounting hardware is good, housing mounting holes allow for 2 ceiling thickness options (flush and flush with drywall thickness added.

This unit is wonderful for new construction, but is not designed by any measure to replace an existing fan. The hardware/ instructions are only for ceilings in the pre-drywall state. I was able to install it by cutting an oversized hole and spending a lot of extra hors...

My reason for buying this unit is because my teenage daughter hates to turn on the exhaust fan and mold is beginning to become a problem because of typical teenage laziness. This fan automatically turns on in high humidity and gets the job done well. It is a fairly quiet unit rated at .7 sones but .9 is more accurate.
Bath fan arrived with exhaust damper broken however, the person I spoke with at Broan was very helpful and sent out a replacement very quickly. The damper is cheaply constructed because it's all plastic with glued on foam and that the foam could be a petri dish for mold to grow on. The damper design also allows way too much inside air loss to me when the unit is off. For the price being charged for this unit I think a thin aluminum damper would be appropriate not foam. The housing is held in place with folded metal tabs and will not come apart easily and cleaning the fan parts will be impossible to do without completely removing the unit. I have a panasonic unit in my half bath and taking it out to clean takes about 5 minutes, this unit will require almost an hour of effort. This is a difficult after contruction install as all mounting work must be done in attic.

So quiet I wasn't sure it was running. I had to climb up right next to it to be sure. Installation was easy and fan does the job it is intended to do, but quieter than any other bathroom exhaust fan I've ever been around. A very good value for what it does.
