Bypass humidifiers do not have any moving parts other than their water valve. They require the installation of extra ducting to draw air from the supply ductwork, through the humidifer and back into the airstream.
Powered humidifiers attach directly to the side of the air handler and use an internal fan to force humidity into the airstream.
